Common Questions

Have questions about our driving lessons? Find answers to some frequently asked questions below.
What do I need to start driving lessons?
You need to be at least 17 years old (16 if you have the mobility part of the PIP), have your provisional driving license and be able to read a standard number plate from 20 metres.
How do I apply for my provisional driving license?
To apply for your provisional driving license you need to be at least 15 years and 9 months old. You must be able to read a standard number plate from 20 metres. Have been given permission to live in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) for at least 185 days. It currently costs £34 to apply online.
How many lessons will I need?
In the UK, there is no legal minimum number of driving lessons required. However, the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) estimates the average learner needs about 45 hours of professional lessons alongside 22 hours of private practice to pass.
Should I choose manual or automatic driving lessons?
With an automatic car it is easier to concentrate on your speed and positioning, which some people prefer. Although it may seem easier to learn in an automatic the current pass rate is lower in an automatic than a manual. You will also only be able to drive automatic vehicles, which will restrict your options. Approximately 65% of cars on the UK roads today are manual so if you're buying an older car it's more likely to be a manual.
How do I book some lessons?
The easiest way to book lessons is to send us a message or email. Whenever I'm in lesson I cannot answer my phone and calls are directed to voicemail. Once I have your message I will call you back as soon as I am available to discuss your requirements.
Do I need to pass my theory before my first lesson?
No, it is not mandatory to pass the theory test before beginning practical lessons. In fact, learning the theory alongside practical driving can often help you understand the rules of the road quicker.
How do I book my practical driving test?
Before you book your practical driving test you must have passed your theory test. You must book your driving test yourself. If you need to change, swap or cancel it, you’ll also need to do this yourself. It’s against the law to book a car driving test for someone else. You will need your driving license number and a credit or debit card. The cost starts from £62
What car will I use for my driving test?
As long as you have checked my availability you will be able to use the car you've been learning in with me. If you have been practicing in your own car you can use it as long as it meets the requirements.
Which driving test centres do you cover?
Most of tests I am involved with take place at the Exeter test centre. On occasion I have also taken students to test at Newton Abbot and Taunton.
Where are the test routes?
Test routes are not published and there are several reasons for this. The DVSA promotes learning road skills that means you can safely drive in any situation. I do not teach students just to pass a test, I teach students to read the road and develop skills for life.
What documents do I need for my tests?
For both your theory and practical tests, you must bring your valid photocard driving licence.
What should I do if I need to cancel/move my test date?
The new rules mean you have to change or cancel your test with 10 working days notice. You can change your test to an earlier or later date or change the location but you can only change your test twice.
What days do you offer lessons?
I currently work Monday to Friday and offer lessons between 9am and 5pm. I am sometimes able to do slightly later or earlier lessons but not regularly.
Can I start and finish my lesson at different places?
Yes, as long as it is within my area and agreed beforehand then it can be arranged.
How much are the driving tests?
The theory test is currently £23 and the practical driving test is currently £62. Evening and weekend tests can be booked but cost £75
Can I drive if wear glasses or I'm colour blind?
You must be able to read a number plate from 20 meters away. You can wear your glasses or contact lenses if you use them for driving. You must tell DVLA if you’ve got any problem with your eyesight that affects both of your eyes, or the remaining eye if you only have one eye. This does not include being short or long sighted or colour blind.
