1. Not making effective observations at junctions
You must make effective observations to identify the junctions and react appropriately. You must be able to judge the speed of approaching vehicles and join the new road safely, whether it's turning at a junction, roundabout or dual carriageways
2. Not using mirrors effectively when changing direction
Always use your mirrors and effective observations before changing direction, changing lanes, going into a new speed zone or exiting a roundabout. You must ensure it is safe before you move.
3. Not moving off safely
You must be able to move off safely while making the correct observations. This includes when you move off from the side of the road, on a slope or hill or from behind a parked vehicle
4. Incorrect positioning when turning right at junctions
You need to make sure you read the road at any junction and position yourself appropriately. Your position should not be confusing or block the oncoming traffic while you wait. At wide junctions you need to make sure you are not positioned to the left when turning right.
5. Not responding appropriately to traffic lights
You must act correctly at traffic lights, including obeying filter arrows. You must stop in the correct place and check that the road is clear before you proceed when the the green light shows
6. Not having proper control of the steering
You must be able to steer safely and control the car. Make sure you steer at the appropriate time. Steering too early or late can mean you hit the kerb or swing out towards another road users
7. Not responding properly to road markings
You must be able to understand and react correctly to all road markings. Always position yourself so you don't straddle lanes or block box junctions
8. Not responding properly to traffic signs
You must be able to understand and react correctly to all traffic signs. Speed limit signs are the most obvious but every sign is there for a reason. You must not ignore STOP or No Entry signs or enter bus lanes when you're not permitted
9. Poor positioning on the road during normal driving
You must be able to position the car correctly for your intended route, stay in the middle of marked lanes and only change lanes when necessary
